The “Data Management Steward / Research Data Management Officer” training program aims to educate a broad audience on the challenges, practices, and tools involved in scientific research data management.

As part of the National Plan for Open Science, research institutions are now being asked to promote open access to publications and, to the extent possible, to research data. Introduced by the European Commission in 2012, the open science policy builds on the opportunities offered by the digital transformation.

The goal of Open Science—which is also supported and promoted by CURIF, of which the University of Montpellier is a member—includes a “training” component designed to raise awareness among doctoral students, and more broadly among all researchers and research staff, about the issues and techniques involved in open science (publication, archiving, open access, etc.).

"Open science" is thus set to become a skill in its own right that may, in the future, be required in job descriptions published by research institutions. It is on its way to becoming a criterion for evaluating projects, organizations, and researchers themselves.

This training is intended for anyone interested in or involved with working with datasets from public scientific research. It is aimed at scientific communities across all disciplines and at all levels. It is also open to individuals leading innovative projects intended for the private sector.

The “Scientific Data Steward” Executive Diploma is based on two pillars:
. Excellence : professors, research engineers, research directors, and data professionals are part of the teaching team for the Montpellier Executive Diploma.
. Innovative teaching methods : the Executive Diploma will be digital, and courses will be offered online. The goal is to promote flexibility in knowledge transfer and increase student enrollment.

Training Objectives

The goal of the program is to raise awareness and provide training in open science techniques, as well as to explain their significance and the issues involved. As such, the program offers a broad range of courses in computer science applied to data management, data engineering (anonymization, storage, archiving), project management, intellectual property and digital law, and more. For this reason, the program also includes courses focused on both theoretical knowledge and practical skills (hands-on projects).

This is a degree program. However, some modules can be taken independently of one another. In that case, the program will lead only to a certificate.

It offers both initial and continuing education.

The program is affiliated with the Faculty of Law and Political Science atthe University of Montpellier. It grew out of the CommonData research program, which is now part of the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme SUD research platform.
